NAPLAN Numeracy Year 5: Topics, Tips and Sample Questions

The NAPLAN numeracy Year 5 test checks how well your child can use maths to solve problems, not just do sums. It runs for 50 minutes online, with no calculator, and covers number, measurement, shape, chance and data. This guide explains what’s on the Year 5 numeracy test, the question types, original sample questions with answers, and how to practise at home.

What the Year 5 numeracy test covers

Numeracy questions draw mostly on maths taught in Years 3 and 4, with some Year 5 content. Typical topics include:

AreaExamples of what Year 5 students are asked
NumberPlace value to tens of thousands, rounding, multiplication and division facts, simple fractions and decimals, money
Algebra and patternsContinuing number patterns, finding a missing number in an equation
MeasurementLength, mass and capacity units, time (including am and pm), perimeter and area of simple shapes
Space and geometry2D and 3D shapes, angles, symmetry, grid maps and directions
Statistics and probabilityReading tables and graphs, describing chance (likely, unlikely, certain)

Many questions are worded problems, so reading carefully matters as much as the maths.

Year 5 numeracy sample questions

These original questions are written in the NAPLAN style. Try them with your child, then reveal the answers.

Question 1

What is 4,306 rounded to the nearest hundred?

  • A. 4,000
  • B. 4,300
  • C. 4,310
  • D. 4,400
Show answer

B. 4,300. Look at the tens digit. It is 0, which is less than 5, so round down to 4,300.

Question 2

A movie starts at 2:45 pm and goes for 1 hour and 35 minutes. What time does it finish?

  • A. 3:80 pm
  • B. 4:10 pm
  • C. 4:20 pm
  • D. 4:35 pm
Show answer

C. 4:20 pm. Add 1 hour to get 3:45 pm, then 15 minutes to reach 4:00 pm, then the remaining 20 minutes.

Question 3

Which fraction is equal to 0.75?

  • A. 1/4
  • B. 3/4
  • C. 7/5
  • D. 75/10
Show answer

B. 3/4. 0.75 is 75 hundredths, and 75/100 simplifies to 3/4.

Question 4

A rectangle is 6 cm long and 4 cm wide. What is its perimeter?

  • A. 10 cm
  • B. 20 cm
  • C. 24 cm
  • D. 24 square cm
Show answer

B. 20 cm. Perimeter is the distance around: 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 cm. 24 square cm is the area, a common mix-up.

Question 5

A bag has 3 red marbles and 5 blue marbles. Ella takes one without looking. Which is true?

  • A. Red is more likely than blue
  • B. Blue is more likely than red
  • C. Red and blue are equally likely
  • D. It is certain to be blue
Show answer

B. There are more blue marbles than red ones, so blue is more likely. It isn’t certain, because red is still possible.

How to help with Year 5 numeracy at home

  • Make it everyday. Cooking (measuring), shopping (money and change) and timetables (time) cover a lot of the test.
  • Practise mental maths without a calculator. Year 5 numeracy doesn’t allow one.
  • Read the question twice. Many mistakes come from missing a word such as “not” or “perimeter”.
  • Ask “How do you know?” Explaining an answer builds the reasoning the test rewards.
  • Check units. cm, m, g, kg, mL and L are common sources of lost marks.
